The smart choice in the Rotterdam area

Ordering procedure for all vessels

There are three categories of vessels:

  • ¡Ü 70 metres in length
  • 70 ¡Ý ¡Ü 125 metres in length
  • ¡Ý 125 metres in length

Shifting is likewise divided into in three categories:

  • Along the quayside with one hawser attached to the quay
  • Within a harbour basin
  • To another harbour basin

The Central Mooring harbour is divided into two basins and the partition is in the extension of the Eastern Mooring harbour.

  • Vessels up to 70 metres may shift without a pilot, taking account of weather conditions
  • Vessels between 70 and 125 metres may shift without pilot within the harbour basin
  • Vessels between 70 and 125 metres to another harbour basin always with a pilot*
  • Vessels above 125 metres always with a pilot

* dependent on the situation, deviations are sometimes allowed. This is at the discretion of the Harbour master.

Every vessel, regardless of length, always needs a pilot when shifting if:

  • The wind force is above 6 on the Beaufort scale (Bft).
  • Visibility is less than 500 metres
  • With hazardous materials on board
  • Shifting from or to tanker wharf
  • Shifting from or to the buoys
  • Draught is more than 6.50 metres in fresh water

When shifting along the quay, no pilot is necessary when:

  • Wind force is less than 6 Bft.
  • At least two hawsers remain ashore
  • No length restrictions

In all cases vessels ¡Ý 500 Bft should make use of recognised line runners.

Departing vessels or vessels entering the channel via inland waterways:
Captains of vessels who wish to use a pilot must report the expected departure time, arrival time or the starting time of the warping movement at least three hours in advance.

Changes or cancellations
Any change in the above-mentioned ETD/ETA of more than an hour must be reported.

This report must be made to:
Port Co-ordination Centre
-telephone +31 10 252 24 33
-fax +31 10 252 14 00
-VHF channel 19

If you do not keep to the rules, this can result in delays for the vessel. For more information: www.loodswezen.nl
